Why fabric weight changes hand-feel, drape, opacity, warmth and perceived quality—and why GSM alone never proves durability.
By PANCH Apparel | Material Science · Textile Science · Evidence
GSM is one number, but a fabric is a three-dimensional structure. A 400 GSM hoodie can feel dense, stable and substantial, but two fabrics at the same GSM can perform very differently because yarn size, loop geometry, knitting density, fibre quality and finishing all change the result.
Evidence before adjectives.
THE FIRST PRINCIPLE
GSM is mass per unit area. It tells us how much textile exists in a defined area; it does not directly tell us fibre quality, tensile strength or lifetime. For PANCH, heavyweight construction is a starting specification, not a quality shortcut.
THE TECHNICAL QUESTION
A three-thread loopback fabric distributes different jobs across yarn systems: the face can be engineered for a clean outer surface, while the loop and binding yarns create body and comfort. Yarn count, twist, stitch length and loop length influence the final architecture.
- Define the specification.
- Connect it to the production batch.
- Verify the relevant performance or claim.
WHERE THE SPECIFICATION MATTERS
Heavier fabric can improve opacity, structure and resistance to distortion, but extra mass also changes drying time, thermal behaviour and manufacturing requirements. The right question is not 'Is 400 GSM good?' It is 'Is the fabric architecture appropriate for the intended use?'
WHAT PANCH DOCUMENTS
PANCH treats GSM as one measurement inside a larger quality system: fibre verification, yarn specification, construction, stitch density, seam testing, dimensional stability, colourfastness and finished-garment inspection.
Traceability chain: Material → Process → Batch → Test / Certificate → Product.
THE ANTI-GREENWASHING TEST
The PANCH standard is simple: specify the weight, document the construction, test the performance, and never use GSM as a substitute for evidence.
PANCH FIELD NOTE
Editorial rule: This article explains the technical principle; product-specific claims must be supported by the applicable PANCH batch records, supplier documentation or laboratory evidence.
