CAN A CERTIFICATE LIE? HOW TO READ A GOTS TRANSACTION CERTIFICATE

A practical guide to reading certification documents without confusing a certificate with a marketing badge.

By PANCH Apparel | Certification · Textile Science · Evidence

Certificates do not 'lie' in the human sense. Documents can, however, be misunderstood, misapplied, expired, incomplete or presented outside their intended scope.

Evidence before adjectives.

THE FIRST PRINCIPLE

A GOTS Scope Certificate demonstrates that a certified entity has qualified activities and product categories within the certification scope. GOTS states that Transaction Certificates are key to traceability and transparency and relate to specific certified transactions. citeturn0search48turn0search7

THE TECHNICAL QUESTION

When reviewing a TC, look for the issuing certification body, certificate reference, seller and buyer information, product description, quantity and shipment or transaction details. Then ask whether those details actually correspond to the material being represented.

  • Define the specification.
  • Connect it to the production batch.
  • Verify the relevant performance or claim.

WHERE THE SPECIFICATION MATTERS

A Scope Certificate is not proof that every shipment from a supplier is certified. A Transaction Certificate is not a blanket certification of the entire company.

WHAT PANCH DOCUMENTS

PANCH's anti-greenwashing rule is therefore straightforward: match the document to the claim, the transaction and the batch.

Traceability chain: Material → Process → Batch → Test / Certificate → Product.

THE ANTI-GREENWASHING TEST

The most valuable certificate is not the one displayed largest. It is the one that can survive cross-checking.

PANCH FIELD NOTE

Editorial rule: This article explains the technical principle; product-specific claims must be supported by the applicable PANCH batch records, supplier documentation or laboratory evidence.
