ZLD EXPLAINED: ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE WITHOUT THE GREENWASHING

What Zero Liquid Discharge means, what it does not mean, and which questions a responsible sourcing team should ask.

By PANCH Apparel | Wet Processing · Textile Science · Evidence

Zero Liquid Discharge is a process objective and facility-level water-management architecture. It does not mean that dyeing consumes no water, creates no waste or has zero environmental impact.

Evidence before adjectives.

THE FIRST PRINCIPLE

A ZLD system typically combines wastewater treatment with processes designed to recover water and manage concentrated residual streams. The exact configuration varies by facility and wastewater characteristics.

THE TECHNICAL QUESTION

The difficult question is not 'Does the mill have ZLD?' It is 'What is the facility's defined discharge boundary, what equipment is operating, what water is recovered, how are concentrated residues handled, and what records demonstrate performance?'

  • Define the specification.
  • Connect it to the production batch.
  • Verify the relevant performance or claim.

WHERE THE SPECIFICATION MATTERS

This is where sourcing discipline matters. A certificate, photograph of a treatment plant or supplier declaration is not equivalent to operational evidence.

WHAT PANCH DOCUMENTS

PANCH therefore treats ZLD as one component of wet-processing verification, alongside chemical controls, process records, water metrics and laboratory testing where appropriate.

Traceability chain: Material → Process → Batch → Test / Certificate → Product.

THE ANTI-GREENWASHING TEST

Zero Liquid Discharge is valuable when it is an operating fact—not when it is an adjective.

PANCH FIELD NOTE

Editorial rule: This article explains the technical principle; product-specific claims must be supported by the applicable PANCH batch records, supplier documentation or laboratory evidence.
